Force chain network in photoelastic grains:

When subject to a stress, granular materials self organize into a network of force chains. Postdoc Sarah Williams and undergrad Natalie Shank are using photoelastic grains–whose polarization changes when stressed–to understand the formation of force chains, inspired by network theory.
